Endodontics is a specialized area of dentistry that involves the treatment of diseases that affect the mouth’s soft tissues (known as the periradicular tissues) and the soft dental pulp of teeth. And dentists who have received specialized training in this field of dentistry are known as endodontists.
The most common procedure associated with endodontics and endodontists is a root canal, a procedure to treat an abscessed tooth. An abscess is an infection that starts in the inner pulp chamber of a tooth and spreads until it is around the root or to the tip of the root.
An endodontist who performs a root canal will first remove the infected and inflamed pulp from the inner tooth, perform a cleaning and disinfection of the pulp chamber and fill the chamber with a dental material like gutta-percha.
It used to be that a root canal procedure was lengthy, costly and painful. But thanks to modern materials, anesthesia and endodontic procedures, a root canal has become just another basic procedure.
